Last year for Lent, I really challenged myself by giving up meat completely and was really pleased with myself (I only broke it once and that was when Randy and I attended a really nice charity event where they only served filet mignon – I mean, how do I turn that down!?). Not only did I learn some fabulous new recipes and techniques (which I’m still using to this day), but I also learned that I can still be satisfied by taking meat out of my diet completley. I will definitely be doing this again this year. (Note, I’ll be giving up red meat, pork and poultry, but I will be eating fish/seafood.)
And I’m not going to lie, I also lost about 5-7 pounds after I gave up meat and that is a definite part of my motivation this year as well. My first wedding dress fitting is in June and I’m going to want to look my best – and be able to maintain it all the way through November!
I have also chosen to give up sweets entirely which is by far going to be my toughest challenge yet. I have the most insane sweet tooth ever (seriously) and it’s been out of control here recently. I’m taking this as a great opportunity to “detox” and get rid of some of my bad eating habits.
More important than anything (and this is something I particularly need to remember…) is that Lent isn’t about looking good in a wedding dress or losing that extra 5 pounds, it’s about making a sacrifice – albeit a small sacrifice in comparison for what He did for us – but a sacrifice nonetheless. This, I must remember.
Are you going to be giving anything up for Lent this year? If so, what?
